JERSEY TEAMS IN NIGHT SESSION

For the 2nd straight season, Bobby Gonzalez and his Seton Hall Pirates have won their 1st round Big East Tournament Game as a #10 seed.  They defeated Providence 109-106 in a game that was a lot more interesting than it had to be.  Seton Hall ran the Friars off the court in the 1st half and at one point in the 2nd half led by 29 points.  Gonzalez chose to start resting guys with 6 minutes left and it may have been a little too early as PC rallied.  Providence played hard but fell short as Duke Mondy’s 3 pointer to force overtime was way long.  In the post game press conference, Gonzalez credited the comeback to what the Pirates did….not what Providence did.

” I took starters out a little too early I guess, but I was trying to rest guys for Notre Dame who is next.  And not to take anything away from Providence, but we missed 14 free throws.”   —  Bobby Gonzalez
All year long Providence has had no problem scoring the basketball….but they have had major problems defending - and Tuesday night was no different.  Providence’s 106 points are the most ever by a losing team in a Big East Conference Game.  The combined 215 points in the game is the most for a non-overtime game since 1982.
Providence forward Jamine Peterson scored 38 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.  Even in a losing effort, he showed why he led the conference in double-double performances this season.  Peterson’s 38 points shatters Billy Donovan’s record 34 points against St. John’s in the Big East Tournament in 1987.
But Herb Pope was too much and the Pirates were a step quicker than the Friars all night long.  Pope had 27 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out.
The hottest team in the league….Notre Dame now awaits.
In the late game last night, Fred Hill’s Scarlet Knights were ‘Lanced’ as Cincinnati defeated Rutgers 69-68.  After Mike Rosario hit a game tying 3 pointer, Rookie of the Year Lance Stephenson drove the lane with 16 seconds to go and got fouled as Hamady Ndiaye went for the game saving block.  Lance hit 1 out of 2 and Rutgers last desperation shot was off the mark.
Mike Rosario had a game high 26 points but it was not enough.  Even though the game was tight throughout, you never had that feeling that they were definitely going to pull this one out.  Rutgers led by one at halftime, but Cincinnati killed Rutgers on the boards by 18….a major difference in the game.
Rutgers senior Hamady Ndiaye recorded 5 blocks and some milestones along the way.  His 5 blocks are a Rutgers Big East Tournament record, he broke the single season block total in Rutgers history and is the all time leading shot blocker in the school’s history.
Stayed tuned to the blog here at WFAN, we will have the most accurate information in the coming weeks regarding head coach Fred Hill’s future at Rutgers.
